Symons’ compliance and driver training operations have been given a huge boost this month with the latest addition to our team.
Doug Peach has joined Symons as our new Driver Performance Manager. Doug has spent the last 23 years as a police officer, including 11 years working as part of the Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit.
Doug’s role in the CVIU was to ensure compliance and safety on the road. That included working closely with transport industry bodies to educate and train drivers and operators.
“I really enjoyed industry training,” Doug says. “A lot of operators knew what was wrong, but didn’t know the best way to do it right. I loved getting out there, meeting the drivers, not just enforcing the rules but also helping people by showing them how it’s supposed to be done.”
Doug’s considerable experience will be huge for our drivers, particularly as he leads our Institute of Training. He’ll work alongside drivers to help them understand the regulations and ensure compliance across our fleet.
“Where I used to stop a driver and look at their log book to see if they’re legal, I’m now working with a driver to make sure they’re legal before they’re going to cross that line. I’m making sure they’re leading up to that line, but they’re going to stop before they cross it.
“I already have all the relevant knowledge, but now I’m applying it from an operational perspective, rather than an enforcement perspective.”
Doug has quickly settled into his new role, and is already seeing how he can use the knowledge he’s built up over the last two decades.
“I was running one of the drivers through the institute and looking at the log book refresher module. I already know what all those rules are and how they need to be applied, which means I can really work with drivers to make sure they understand and they’re compliant.”
Doug’s enthusiastic and friendly approach means he’s always happy to have a chat or lend a hand, particularly to our younger drivers.
“I love the fact that I can impart a little bit of knowledge on someone and it makes a huge difference. If I can spend five minutes with someone and have them walk away knowing something they didn’t know before, I get a lot of satisfaction out of that.”
Welcome Doug - it’s great to have you on board!
